There may be method to the Apple Madness

There may be method to the Apple Madness

I haven’t tried it yet, but there are reports from many sectors that Apple is offering free wireless access for Iphone users at Starbucks locations. Very strange when you consider that we have Edge network access and generally don’t need a regular wireless network. Here’s the method though: there is a minor hack that will allow PC or Mac users to access for free: all they have to do is fire up Safari and then going to Edit->Advanced checking off…

Adobe opens FLV and SWF formats

Adobe opens FLV and SWF formats

This is interesting, after so many years, Adobe has decided to open the FLV and SWF formats, which means that we’ll be able to do more interesting things with them now as developers. For those who may not pay attention, pretty much any animation you see on the web is in SWF format, and FLV is what is used almost universally for web-based video players, such as you see with YouTube. Adobe will be removing the licensing restrictions on all…

Lion on the Loose

Making Pulling Teeth Fun

Making Pulling Teeth Fun

My kids are Webkinz addicts, plain and simple. For those of you who don’t have kids, or have been living under a rock for the past two years, Webkinz are little plush toys which come with a code attached to them so you can go online to the Webkinz site and register the pet adoption, then you can play online with your toy.  If you have mulitples, they can play together. Basically, they’ve created a kids version of “Second Life”…

Unintended Consequences

Unintended Consequences

From Tom Willmot via Twitter and the Telegraph.co.uk OGC Unveils Logo to Red Faces It cost £14,000 to create, but clearly no-one at the smart London design outfit that came up with the new logo for HM Treasury thought to turn it on its side. The logo, for the Office of Government Commerce, was intended to signify a bold commitment to the body’s aim of “improving value for money by driving up standards and capability in procurement”. Instead, it has…

The Web 2.0 Paradox

The Web 2.0 Paradox

As readers know, I’ve been testing Twitter.  It’s fun, but for me the jury is still out. One of the things I’m noticing is the preponderance of New Media Gurus inhabiting Twitter.  And inevitably, many feel the need to constantly evangelize on the issues of Web 2.0.  News flash: if you have to talk in broad terms about Web 2.0, Social Networking or Social Media, you’ve probably already missed the boat.  This is not some abstract concept that is coming…

Where are the Herring?

Where are the Herring?

The Cape Cod Chronicle reported over the weekend that the herring runs haven’t started yet, and people are worried. The runs in Harwich and Chatham are all but devoid of the silvery baitfish, as they have been around the state for the last eight years. Chatham Herring Warden Donald St. Pierre checks the run at Ryder’s Cove three times each day, and Tuesday morning, he saw only a few dozen fish. “It’s not a lot. I haven’t seen any schools,”…
