Google Bids on Wireless

Google Bids on Wireless

Google announced that they will bid at least 4.6 billion for the so called 700  mhz wireless block that is to be made available for wireless providers, according to the FT today. This move is particularly interesting, considering this passage from the FT article: The winning bidder for part of the spectrum would be required to adopt “open access” provisions that would let customers use any handset and access any internet service over the network, without needing the approval of…

Ask Not For Whom The Blog Is Updated…

Since we started this blog, I’ve had a bit of a quandry.  While a good portion of the work we do at Vario is with technology companies, we also do a fair amount of work with small businesses.  The blog has done really been tremendous at bringing in traffic to our site, and many of our corporate customers site the blog as one of the reasons they contacted us. But the small businesses…the blog may have many posts directed at…

Churbuck Named Top Ten Client Side Marketing Blogger

Congratulations go out to David Churbuck on being named by Peter Kim at Forrester as one of the top Client-Side Marketing Bloggers.  A great honor for a great blog.  Even if he does have an annoying habit of hosing it on a regular basis with the widget of the week. 😉 (Disclosure: I handle some of the web masterly-like stuff for David, most recently his server move and the upgrade to the latest greatest WordPress). Here’s the full list, many…

Linkfarms Not Worth It…

Linkfarms Not Worth It…

I had an interesting call the other day from a local coffee shop/signmaker/fax shop/web design firm.  They wanted to sell me a link in their “link farm” for $75. Wikipedia on Link Farms: A link farm is a form of spamming the index of a search engine (sometimes called spamexing or spamdexing). Other link exchange systems are designed to allow individual websites to selectively exchange links with other relevant websites and are not considered a form of spamdexing. Okay, these…

Google Analytics Update Coming & Overview Video

The Google Analytics Blog posted an announcement that the Google Analytics Interface will be updated on July 18, which is the final phase of their V2 update that began in May. They’ll be rolling out some other new bits, and for those of you that haven’t been working with it, here’s an overview. Fast Implementation – just cut and paste javascript into your page.  This really isn’t a new feature, but they’ve got to mention it as it’s a big…

The Next Scourge of the Blogs

The Next Scourge of the Blogs

I really don’t like it when someone tries to take over my computer.  Its downright impolite. And that’s exactly what’s happening with the new take on the Splog that I’ve started seeing in the past week. Here’s what’s happening. An unscrupulous blog owner posts some content and then pings Technorati and Google. The blog gets indexed by both search providers, then the blog owner redirects the link to an alternate page, which throws up a popup with the age old “NOTICE: If…

Sprint Nextel Drops Problem Customers, Adds Landline Replacement

Sprint Nextel Drops Problem Customers, Adds Landline Replacement

Sprint Nextel Corp. has told about 1,000 disgruntled cell phone customers they will no longer be their cell phone provider. From the Houston Chronicle: Analyzing customer accounts, Sprint identified about 1,000 over the past six months to a year calling customer service centers at a rate 40 to 50 times above average, and the roughly 40,000 monthly calls strained Sprint’s ability to serve other subscribers, said Sprint spokeswoman Roni Singleton. An interesting move for a company that’s had trouble signing…
